Date:
September 27th, 2025
Time:
• 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM Duration: 3 hours
Workshop Directors:
Forensic Histopathologists from the EFMA Pathology Department
Workshop Overview:
This focused, hands-on workshop will sightsee the microscopic findings in the heart, in cases of sudden cardiac death (SCD). Participants will receive practical slide examination of different heart pathologic findings, such as ischemic changes, coronary insults, cardiomyopathies, myocarditis, and other causes of SCD. Expert-led demonstrations, case study analyses, and interactive discussions will guide participants in making accurate diagnoses through detailed microscopic examination of the heart.
Training Program:
1. Introduction to Microscopic Examination of the heart
- An introductory session covering the main classification of different causes of sudden death and their risk factors
- Brief demonstration of different histological techniques, including tissue preparation, staining, and slide examination in forensic cardiopathology with a focusing on their application in sudden death cases
2. Microscopic Examination of the heart
- Step-by-Step examination: Participants will engage in hands-on examination of prepared heart slides, focusing on the pathological features that must be searched for in sudden cardiac death cases in each anatomic part of the heart, such as coronaries, myocardium, pericardium….
- Identification of Pathological Features: Learn to recognize and differentiate between various pathologies that can lead to sudden cardiac death, diagnostic criteria to and significant structural abnormalities.
3. Case Study Analysis with Microscopic Findings
- Participants will analyze different case studies that include heart tissue slides from sudden cardiac death cases with varying causes. These will include cases of coronary artery disease, myocardial diseases, valvular diseases and congenital heart changes.
- Interactive discussions will focus on interpreting the microscopic changes in each case and their differential diagnosis and diagnostic implications.
4. Correlating Microscopic Findings with deceased History and Autopsy findings
- Understand how to integrate microscopic findings with deceased history and autopsy findings. Learn the importance of correlating tissue pathology findings with known risk factors and observations in SCD cases.
5. Reporting of Microscopic Examination
- Learn to document the pathologic microscopic findings of the heart. Emphasis on what is important to note in reports and how to correlate these findings with heart gross findings.
6. Interactive Discussion and Q&A
- Engage in a dynamic Q&A session with forensic pathology experts to clarify any questions about microscopic examination, diagnostic challenges, or unusual cases encountered during the workshop.
Workshop Objectives:
- Microscopic Examination: Gain practical experience in analyzing heart tissue samples from sudden death cases, focusing on histological findings.
- Diagnostic Interpretation: Learn to identify specific microscopic features that correlate with sudden cardiac death causes
- Correlating Findings: Develop the ability to correlate microscopic findings with deceased history and autopsy findings to accurately find the cause of death.
- Expert Guidance: Receive feedback and insights from forensic pathology experts through interactive case discussions and Q&A sessions.
Who Should Attend:
- Forensic Pathologists & Medical Examiners: Professionals involved in the investigation of sudden death cases who wish to refine their skills in microscopic cardiac pathology.
- Histopathologists: Specialists in tissue analysis who want to expand their knowledge in forensic pathology, particularly in cardiac tissue analysis related to sudden death.
- Medical Students & Residents: Ideal for those in training in forensic pathology or histopathology, who seek hands-on experience in the microscopic examination of cardiac tissues.
- Researchers in Forensic Medicine or Pathology: Researchers focused on the microscopic aspects of sudden cardiac death and other heart-related conditions
